Student Spotlight: Casey Spires

Casey Spires

    My name is Casey Spires; I have been a student at Eastern Kentucky University since 2011 as a Networking, Security and Electronics Major.  I was hired as a temporary intern for cooperative learning credit in the Spring 2015 Semester. During my internship I completed the interview process and was hired on as a Student Employee for the Training Resource Center.

            In this position I assist several grant funded programs including the Department of Corrections Education Branch Corrections Education Readiness Program.   I’ve traveled to Kentucky State Correctional Institutions including but not limited to Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women. My role is to help improve the quality and accessibility of trainings with practical application of my newly developed skills as a projected graduate of the Networking, Security and Electronics Bachelors of Science Program.

My scope of work with the Training Resource Center includes assisting the Technology Resource Manager on special technical project developments, which improve the overall ease of information retrieval and management within the center.  One of the special projects I have been assigned is to web development.   I applied my knowledge of ASP.NET and web forms to complete the project. I also construct and deploy images to computers stationed throughout the Training Resource Center, as well as performing routine tasks such as software and hardware troubleshooting for people throughout the center.  I am currently working on building a database for one of the grant funded projects within the Training Resource Center.

            My experience as a cooperative intern and Student Employee within the Training Resource Center has helped me focus on how I will apply my degree once I graduate.  My dream job is to now peruse a career as a developer. I am hoping as I spend more time here I can really hone my skills further and become the progressively excel as a developer.  I enjoy enhancing staff members experience with technology and innovation in their routine work day.
