Student Spotlight : Ross Potier
My name is Ross Potier and I have attended EKU as a student for four years. I work within the Training Records Information Services (TRIS) unit of the Training Resource Center as a student programmer. TRIS provides online access to training activities and information for the State training initiatives.
After graduation I intend to work as a software developer. This career choice will directly involve team-based development of software, management of databases, and the creation of web-based applications.
Working as a programmer is an opportunity to gain skills relevant to my career goals. I've been provided the opportunity to work directly with databases, which has increased my familiarity with data structures and stored procedures as they are used in a practical environment. I have attended meetings regarding a comprehensive system redesign, which has provided me with the insight required to overcome unique requirements. I have also developed web pages that interface with the databases, furthering my knowledge of web development, queries, and information security. Perhaps the greatest aspect of working with TRIS has been the opportunity to work with professionals, all of whom have been amazingly supportive and patient. It has been immensely gratifying to work with the Training Resource Center, developing skills that will no doubt serve me well in my future endeavors as a software developer.
