Student Spotlight: Kate Woods

Student Employee:Kate Woods

My name is Katherine Woods, I have attended EKU for the past three years and I have been employed by the Training Resource Center (TRC) as a student associate since October 2013. Within TRC I work with the Public Child Welfare Certification Program (PCWCP). PCWCP is a program that is applicable to 11 different universities in the state of Kentucky, and is specifically designed for those students who are pursuing a degree in social work.

As a student at Eastern Kentucky University, I am currently pursuing a degree in Health Services Administration. After I finish my undergraduate degree I intend to work as a Health Information Management (HIM) director in a non-profit facility. This career choice will include maintaining, collecting, and analyzing health information that is shared between doctors, patients, insurance providers, and other individuals who are involved within the healthcare field. The role of an HIM director also consists of developing and implementing organizational policies and directing the health information management service areas while ensuring compliance with professional, state and federal regulatory requirements.

As a student associate for the Training Resource Center, I have had the opportunity to gain transferrable skills for my future profession. TRC has allowed me to gain practical experience through hands on administrative duties such as managing filing systems, mail and phone correspondence with students and those working within the program, and data entry.  I have also had the opportunity to work on large projects assistting with PCWCP Retreats which are conferences hosting about 70-100 students.  TRC has helped me develop skills to work within a team while acquiring responsibility, enhance my interpersonal and organization skills and most importantly I have had the opportunity to be a part of a dedicated and successful program employed by outstanding professionals.
